By Anne Brady

SETTING:
Behind the gym at a high school, Anytown, USA.

At rise, EVE, 17, leans against the bleachers, texting. She is the typical high school beauty. IAN, 17, enters, and nervously approaches her. He is the typical high school loser.

IAN
Hey.

EVE
(tucks her phone away)
What?

IAN
Are you–Eve?

EVE
What do you think?

IAN
I think…um, yes?

EVE
(mocking)
You think, um, right.

IAN
Oh, ok. So.
(tries to flirt)
Hi.

EVE
No.
(starts to exit)

IAN
No wait, I just. I heard, you’re the one to talk to about … you know.

EVE
No I don’t know.

IAN
About, like, papers, and stuff.

EVE
What about papers and stuff?

IAN
About writing them.

EVE
Because I’m human, and all humans love paper?

IAN
No! No, because, you’re really smart.

EVE
Square root of 300.

IAN
17.32050–

EVE
What are the main themes in War and Peace?

IAN
There are several, including ambition, the futility of war, and the irrationality of human
motivations.

EVE
How long do I bake a cheese souffle?

IAN
In an oven or an air fryer?

EVE
Robots are smarter than humans. Write the paper yourself.

IAN
All that stuff is known! It’s written down or it’s been said–I need something no one has
thought of before.

EVE
Yeah, you and everyone else.
