Monday Night PlayGround is all about potential: the potential of new writers for the stage, finding inspiration in a prompt, writing a short play, and then seeing that short play performed for the first time, live before other theatre makers and theatre-goers. The potential of new stories — comedic, dramatic and those that defy a simple label — being converted from ideas to words on a page to a performed experience in a theater and truly coming alive. For twenty-eight years, six months each year, PlayGround has enthralled Bay Area artists and audiences alike with the potential embedded in the short works of Monday Night PlayGround, helping to grow the Monday Night series into one of the nation’s leading platforms for new work, while also launching the careers of hundreds of new playwrights, actors, and directors. And recognizing this program’s potential to transform communities, we eventually expanded to Los Angeles (in 2012), New York (2021) and, now Chicago.
But to fully realize the potential of this program, we knew it was not enough to expand to other cities. Making Monday Night PlayGround admission-free and simulcasting each event has helped to break down the barriers that separate us and foster a new, larger, more diverse and inclusive community, one where everyone’s potential can be more fully realized. From October to April, over the course of 24 events and 144 short plays, artists and audiences alike can experience the full potential of the American Theatre!
